Group claims unenviable asbestos record for SA
The Asbestos Victims Association says South Australia now has the highest per capita rate of asbestos-related diseases in the world.
A forum in Adelaide over the weekend brought together asbestos victims, researchers and medical experts to launch an asbestos coalition to tackle the issues of compensation and awareness about mesothelioma.
The association says South Australia has overtaken Western Australia as the state with the highest rate of mesothelioma and it is estimated that by 2020, 1,200 to 1,500 people will die from the disease.
Terry Miller from the Asbestos Victims Association says some regions will report a higher rate of illness than others.
"You have a higher proportion of asbestos-related diseases from people particularly around the Whyalla area that were involved in the ship building. I mean asbestos in its day was a super-duper product," he said.
